We welcome suggestions on topics, speakers, or attendees.

If you are planning to attend either or both of the Conferences and are not a speaker, please make your own hotel reservations. If you would like assistance for a reservation, contact the Center as soon as possible. To receive the special conference rates, inform the hotel when making your reservation that you are attending the ICEED meetings. At check-in, be certain to ask if you have an information envelope. The 35th Annual International Energy Conference, "Volatility Is the Norm: Challenging Conventional Energy Assumptions," will address such topics as:

  • Energy supplies and prices have shown extreme volatility over the past several years, making energy uncertainty a major global concern. For example, since 2004 the average oil price per barrel has fluctuated by more than $65; compare that to the $15 differential per barrel during the 1990s. Consumers and producers have tended to assume that the oil price fluctuations we are now seeing are temporary; but are these assumptions wrong? Have we entered a new era where major price swings are the norm, not the exception?

  • What are the underlying fundamentals that are leading to continuing volatility in the energy market?

  • Who will be the winners and the losers in an energy market where volatility is the norm? Can alternative energy sources capitalize on the hydrocarbon market uncertainty and gain greater market penetration? How will industry, particularly the automotive sector, respond?

  • How will decision makers, from countries to companies, adjust their approaches to energy? Will the United States see a real change in its policy toward reducing fossil-fuel dependence?

  • Last, why does energy volatility potentially benefit state-owned or national oil/gas companies relative to international oil/gas companies?

From midday Tuesday (April 22) to noon Wednesday (April 23) the 29th Annual International Area Conference on "The Energy Alliance of the 21st Century: Asian Consumers and Middle East Suppliers" will look at:

  • What are the global implications of a strengthened alliance between Asian energy consumers and Middle East suppliers?

  • Could oil soon be denominated in a basket of currencies rather than the U.S. dollar?

  • Will we see other regional alliances develop in response to the Asian-Middle East connection? Will the U.S. need to be more reliant on oil and gas from Mexico and Canada? Will Europe be more reliant on oil and gas from Russia?

  • How will new energy alliances be reflected at the political level?

Those who have attended earlier conferences are aware the following listing is provided as an initial sampling only. By early March, a detailed list and tentative program can be furnished upon request. Among the attendees and/or participants are M.A.A. Babalola (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation); Gregga Baxter (Gulf International Bank, New York), Mustapha Benkhemou (Ministry of Energy and Mines, Algeria); Paritud Bhandhubanyong (National Science & Technology Development Agency, Thailand), Guy Caruso (Energy Information Administration, U.S. Department of Energy), Alberto Cisneros-Lavaller (Global Business Consultants, Caracas); Tilak Doshi (Dubai Multi Commodities Exchange), Mark Finley (BP America, Inc.), Sergio Galina (Mexican Petroleum Institute), Salman Saif Ghouri (Qatar Petroleum); Kenji Goto (Embassy of Japan, Washington, DC), Paul Horsnell (Barclays Capital, London), John Kilduff (MF Global Ltd.), Michael Lynch (Strategic Energy & Economic Research, Inc.), Oystein Noreng (Norwegian School of Management), John Roberts (Platts, U.K.); Kjell Stautland (StatoilHydro), Khemadhat Sukondhasingha (National Metal & Materials Technology Center, Thailand), Philip K. The Center has initiated a moderate registration fee to cover all meals, transportation to and from events scheduled for the two and a half days of the sessions, and distribution of the available papers. You are requested to indicate the meals you anticipate taking with the Conferences (back of this page). Those who have attended past meetings will recall the effort to provide exceptional lunches and dinners at different locations; this is unchanged with outstanding restaurants reserved for our events in April.

The fee schedule below is in keeping with the Center's nonprofit status. We prefer fee payment (in dollars payable on a U.S. bank) to accompany the registration form or separately as arranged; note that credit cards are not accepted. However, the fee may be paid at the time of the sessions at the higher level or at the regular amount by special arrangement. If you plan to use the late registration option, you still need to complete the form below in order to reserve your place. As with all our previous conferences, attendance is by invitation and reservation only in order to keep the number of attendees to a level that preserves the optimal exchange of views and contacts. Should you need to cancel your reservation/registration, your fee will be refunded in full if notification of cancellation is received before April 10. In order to accommodate changing schedules, we can keep the reservation and change the name of the registrant if notified prior to the sessions.
